Hannah - England to Iceland: August 20, 2015
Well, I'll explain a little about last night. We arrived in Iceland on time. It was a 3 hour flight from London to here. We got through customs without any worries. Once we got our bags, we went to get our rental car. We couldn't find a desk but we found a guy with a sign that droves us (the guy, not the sign) to the place where we would get the car. Unfortunately, while we were gone, moms drivers license expired. So we couldn't use the rental car. (Originally dad was going to drive.) we caught a 30 person buss to the bus terminal where we were supposed to catch another bus to our hotel. Turns out that didn't work. So the rental car company said they'd get is a cab. (They'd pay...they messed up on the bus stuff) they then came back and said that a taxi would take too long (and cost too much money because we are about 45 minutes away from Reykjavík, which is 15-20 minutes from the airport) so this wonderful lady took us in a 15 ish person van to our hotel. 3 passengers in a big bus felt a little silly, but at least we got to our hotel. Now, our hotel is a family run hotel business that is right on the water. The lady who checked us in (and so far has the best English) was a wonderful young lady who is due for her baby in 4-5 days. After we got checked in, she got us in our massive room. There's a whole big seating area, and a verrrrryyyy large expanse for our beds. Because we originally were going to have 4 people, mom had gotten us the family suite. It's...very big, so with three people it's even bigger. We counted 17 seating options. But the view is spectacular. We have the best room because we have a panoramic view of the lake and mountains in Iceland. I'm in love with this country and its landscape. It's truly an artists dream come true because the landscape is perfect. We were going to walk to a pizza place a few minutes away from, but the weather looked bad so we opted for the soup and sandwiches at the hotel Kruines. (That's the name of our hotel) we had Icelandic butter, bread, some sort of speed infused with arctic herbal flower stuff, salad, homemade broccoli soup, (absolutely delicious) and ham and cheese sandwiches. So, it was actually a hearty meal. After dinner we booked a big bus excursion with Greyline Tours before heading to bed. Since it doesn't get completely dark until 11:00 pm, we had to put down all the blinds in order for the room to be relatively dark. (And the sun comes up around 4:00 am) the northern lights are seen year round in Iceland, so in the lobby there was a sign up sheet for guests. If the staff at Kriunes saw the northern lights during the night, they'd knock on your door to wake you up. Unfortunately, it was too cloudy for that, so we weren't surprised. The northern lights are on my bucket list. I hope I get to see them sometime in my life.Well,
Goodbye for now,
~Hannah~
