Hannah - England Day 8: August 16, 2015 - Warwick

Hello!
Today was a wonderful day at the castle. We finally got to see a castle! This morning we got up relatively early (7:15) we rushed to the tube. We caught the tube to the train station and ran to our train. We got on seconds before the train set off. Today we went to Warwick (wear-ick) there was a lovely castle there. We rode the train for about an hour and a half. When we got off in Warwick, the town was pretty quiet. Because it was a Sunday morning, we were alone as we we walked down the street towards the castle. Since we'd rushed out the door in a hurry, we hadn't had breakfast. As we walked through Warwick, we were met with closed shoppes. Luckily there was a little place to get food once we were in the courtyard of of the entrance. Oh, I forgot to mention that. The town itself looked very Germanic. It was so lovely! Anyway, we got some scones, butter, and jam, and ate them before heading into the castle grounds. Note: at this point we hadn't even seen the castle. Apparently this castle has been made into a theme park for British families. However it was sorta like a renaissance fair with the castle. Ha know, there were knights all dressed up etc. when we passed through the entrance (it was modern) we saw the castle in all its glory. Even though it was 10:30 (and the castle opened a t 10:00) there were crowds...but not too big of crowds. We walked the drawbridge, under the portcullis, and into the castle courtyard. The courtyard itself was much larger than I thought! After admiring the large courtyard, we went into the grand hall. They had set up the interior of the castle as if it were the medieval times. Everything was so elegant! Then the props sprang forward to the early 1900s. We got to see how people furnished this grand castle. At one point in time, Ulysses S Grant, Theodore Roosevelt, and Winston Churchill (in his youth) visited Warwick castle! Also, for those who have watched Downton Abbey, they filmed part of their show here at the castle. After our self guided tour through the castle, mom and I sat in the courtyard while sumner and dad climbed/walked the wall. By the time they got back, it was around 1:00, so we left the castle, with our hands stamped for re entry, in search of lunch in town. We found this lovely luncheon room. It also featured tea :) after a wonderful lunch of sandwiches and tea, we went back to the castle and walked along the river, which ran behind the castle. We had missed the jousting competition and the flight of the Eagles, but we still got to see knights and horses all decked out in their jousting colours. .the weather was gorgeous today's, so we had a relaxing and pleasant walk along the water. Once we had tired of the castle, we went back to the train station. There was archery and other activities like that, but they cost around £5 per person. A little pricey for 3 arrows. It seemed that the train back was more of a commuter train into London because the train was very full. The ride was uneventful. I started Pride and Prejudice (written by the British author Jane Austen) for the first time yesterday, and I am now halfway through the book. I intend to finish it before our stay in England has terminated. We stopped at the biggest shopping mall in England on the way home. The place can indefinitely be called the largest. It did, however, have a Lego store, a Disney store, and Five Guys Burgers and Fries. It was about 5:00 when we decided to find some dinner. Tonight we had Greek food. They had some of the most delicious hummus and olives. After dinner we walked back to our apartment. Today was wonderful, and I would repeat it.
Cheers,
~Hannah~
